Track Wind Calculator

Calculate how wind in a stadium affects your splits, or find the equivalent still-air split at the same effort.

Over a full lap, changing direction reduces the effects of headwinds and tailwinds, but they do not always cancel completely.

Wind direction

The selected angle is the direction the wind comes from, not the direction it blows towards. On the track, 0° is a crosswind on the straights. Homestretch runs left to right. Home tail = wind at your back.

How it works

Choose the effort distance and mode: calculate a split in the selected wind conditions, or find the equivalent still-air split at the same effort. Adjust wind profile and direction using the same options as the Wind Pace Calculator. The tool analyses relative wind direction on the straights and bends and updates the result automatically.

What to keep in mind

Over a full lap, headwinds and tailwinds partly offset each other but do not always cancel completely, because wind’s aerodynamic effect is nonlinear. The model assumes constant wind speed and direction, ignores drafting and measures distance along the official lane 1 measurement line.

Methodology & sources

Track: a model based on standard World Athletics track geometry. The construction radius is 36.50 m; the lane 1 measurement line is 0.30 m farther out, giving a measurement radius of 36.80 m. Each straight is 84.390 m long, and the nominal lap is approximately 400.001 m. Each bend is divided into 180 straight segments to calculate relative wind direction. The metabolic model is the same as the Wind Pace Calculator. Comparison with the Running Writings Wind Calculator checks consistency; it is not independent scientific validation.

NEXT STEP

Every second counts when you are chasing peak performance.

If you need precision in both your data and how you turn it into training, we can work together. We will identify when to push into the wind and when to let pace change so you can maintain the right intensity.
